Veterinary Drug Dispensing

Veterinary Drugs:

The DLAR provides veterinary drugs for use in approved IACUC protocols. Many standard anesthetic, antibiotic and analgesic drugs are routinely kept in stock. Other drugs will need to be special ordered. DLAR places a 15% recharge on the all drug purchases to recover the cost of ordering, stocking, dispensing and DEA record keeping.

  1. Contact the DLAR Veterinary Technicians (sandra.scherrer@stonybrook.edu or jean.rooney@stonybrook.edu or marissa.mastromarino@stonybrook.edu or carmenza.lopez@stonybrook.edu) by e-mail. Complete the Drug Order Form and include the following information:
    • Drug(s) needed (drug, concentration, amount)
    • Principle Investigator
    • Name of person requesting the drugs
    • Lab phone number
    • IACUC protocol #
  2. If you do not have e-mail access, the drug order forms are available outside the Vet Technician’s office (HSC Rm 229). Complete the form and put into the bin on the wall outside the office.
  3. It is requested that these forms be completed and received by Vet Staff 24hrs in advance so that someone is available to distribute the requested drugs.
  4. Drug dispensing takes place from 1:00-2:00pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Vet Tech office (room 229 in the BST facility).
  5. You will be asked to sign off for the drugs received.
  6. Controlled drugs will be dispensed in the same manner as above with some additional requirements.
    • The completed Log and empty corresponding bottle from the previous drug purchase will be reviewed by a member of the Vet Staff before new drugs will be dispensed. A new log will be given with each bottle purchased.
    • Only 10mls of drug will be dispensed at any time.
    • All controlled substances need to be secured by a double lock and key.
