I'm New!

Welcome to the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) at Stony Brook University! This page provides a checklist to help new researchers navigate the onboarding process. Let’s get started!

Step 1

Write your IACUC Protocol. Please follow the instructions outlined in the IACUC Submission guidelines. If you need additional support, please  contact ORC_OVPR@stonybrook.edu.

Step 2

Obtain Occupational Medicine Clearance. Please go the DLAR app and sign in using your email address and NetID password. If you need additional assistance, please submit a ticket referencing the NDLAR (SBU/SBM) app.

Step 3

Ordering animals from vendors can be done through our Topaz system. If you need further assistance, please contact Veralynn.Perillo@stonybrook.edu. Importing animals from another institution can also be done through our Topaz system, and if you require help with this, please contact Sandra.Scherrer@stonybrook.edu

Step 4

Obtain facility access by following the instructions outlined in the Orientation Class form. Facility access is strictly enforced and visitors are not permitted without Director approval.

Step 5

Need to request a special diet or animal transport? Check out our Animal Care Services page. Need to request technical assistance or full study support? Check out our Veterinary Care Services page. Need to arrange for specialized imaging or operating room reservation? Please utilize our iLab calendars, and contact DLAR_ClinicalTeam@stonybrook.edu for training on this equipment.

What if I'm just a new student/technician working in a research lab?

Please start by completing the mandatory OLAW Class, which will instruct you on the correct CITI modules to take, and provide you the Security Access Form to download.

You must then ask your PI to add you to their protocol on both the occupational health website AND the myResearch platform.

Once you have been added to the protocol, email the following to veralynn.perillo@stonybrook.edu
  1. Your CITI certificates
  2. Your signed Security Access Form
  3. The front and back of your SBU ID badge
  4. Your IACUC Protocol number

Within two business days, please check that your ID works to access the facilities.
