Facilities

About our Facilities:

  • Eight -80°C chambers with a combined total capacity for over 1.8 million samples
  • Four point of use -80°C upright freezers
  • -80°C Freezer outside of Freezer Farm with passcode access for after-hours and weekend drop-offs.

About our Technology:

The permanent storage -80°C chambers are situated within a -20°C walk in chamber. Manufactured by Bahnson Environmental Systems, this set up allows for greater storage space at a much lower energy expenditure than traditional upright and chest freezers commonly used for sample storage.
In addition to this walk-in system the Freezer Farm has four traditional point-of-use -80oc Freezers. Three of these are located within the ambient temperature area of the Freezer Farm. These three freezers are for incoming and outgoing samples so that they can be added into the database system and barcoded for organizing the permanent storage area. The fourth Freezer is located in the hallway outside of the Freezer Farm and provides 24-hour access to researchers who need to drop-off or pick-up samples outside of the operating hours of the Freezer Farm.

Security Measures:

  • 24-hour monitoring of freezer farm temperatures.
  • Double compressor system, to ensure there is always one working compressor if there is a mechanical issue.
  • Hospital generator hook-up, with highest level of priority.
  • Dedicated LN2 lines in the event of extended power outages.
  • Strict door control for access into the Freezer Farm.
  • Video recording of all access into and out of Freezer Farm.
  • REES cellular based alarm monitoring for point of use freezers and after-hours drop off freezer.
