Animal Ordering

How to Place and Animal Order

- Obtain access to our Topaz program by submitting your NetID, your PI’s name, and IACUC protocol number to veralynn.perillo@stonybrook.edu.

- Login to Topaz . Click on “Animal Orders,” then hover over “Orders” and select “Create New Order.” Select the correct type of Animal Order Form:

 

  • Approved Vendor Animal Order Form - Use this form to order rodents from SBU’s Pre-Approved commercial rodent vendors such as The Jackson Laboratory, Charles River Laboratories, and Taconic.
  • Non-Approved Vendor Animal Order Form - Use this form to order rodents from commercial rodent vendors that have not been pre-approved (such as MMRRC and NIA), or to order non-rodent animals from commercial vendors.
  • IMPORT Request Form - Use this form to order animals from another institution. DLAR’s Biosecurity Coordinator will assist with courier services, MTAs, and quarantine requirements.
  • EXPORT Request Form - Use this form to send animals to another institution. DLAR’s Biosecurity Coordinator will assist with courier services, MTAs, and quarantine requirements.
  • Customized Mice (Special Project Orders) - Use this form to order customized, genetically modified rodents from commercial vendors. DLAR’s Biosecurity Coordinator will assist with courier services, MTAs, and quarantine requirements.
  • Transfer Animals from one Protocol to Another - Use this form to request a transfer of animals from one IACUC protocol to another.

 

- Follow the instructions provided on the form. A correctly submitted order will result in an email to yourself and the PI. For commercial vendors, you will also receive a confirmation email once the order has been placed.

- Once animals are received, you will get a final email to include information about where to find your animals. Any issues with animal orders should be reported within 72 hours of arrival.

 

 

Please Note!

-      Only Research Foundation, Veterans Association, or external funds can be used to purchase animals. State and Stony Brook Foundation funds cannot be used.

-      ANIMAL ORDERS MUST BE PLACED ON TOPAZ BY 11:00 AM ON WEDNESDAYS IN ORDER FOR ANIMALS TO ARRIVE BY THE FOLLOWING WEEK.

-      Large orders (50+ mice) or USDA-covered species also require a 2-week lead time.
